Slide 1
There were three boys, Jake, Karl and Rod. The boys were walking home together after school as they all lived in the same direction.
Slide 2
Jake had recently moved into the area and had only started at the school a week ago, so he was pleased to be able to go home with Karl and Rod as he had not yet had chance to make any close friends.
As the boys walked, they talked about their favourite things; Karl liked making models and playing football, Rod like playing tennis. Jake also liked football and was interested in electronics. The boys then talked about their favourite films. Jake said that he had been given a new DVD for his birthday and had taken it into school that day to show one of the teachers. Jake was looking forward to watching the DVD again later that evening.
Slide 3
Suddenly, without any warning Karl grabbed hold of Jake’s bag with the DVD in it. Jake tried to hold on to the bag but Karl had taken him by surprise. Karl tugged at the bag as Jake tried to hold on but Karl had got a good grip with both hands and managed to pull the bag out of Jake’s hands. Karl then turned and raced off down the street.
Slide 4
Jake and Rod watched in amazement as Karl ran off. They just couldn’t believe Karl would do such a thing. Had he stolen it, did Karl intend to return it? If this was Karl’s idea of a joke is wasn’t very funny!
Slide 5
Rod, who had hurt his foot playing football couldn’t run after Karl but thought that Jake would get the bag back OK, as Karl had dropped it on the pavement.
Suddenly Rod realised that everything was not OK as he saw Jake kneeling on the path looking very sad.
Slide 6
Rod realised that he needed to help, he hobbled down the road as fast as he could to Jake. He comforted Jake and said that he would walk him home even though it was much further on than his own house.
There were a number of other kids around who were playing out and had seen all that had happened. Some stared at Rod, others just walked on but no one had gone to see if Jake was alright they didn’t want to get involved. Within moments the onlookers turned around and just carried on with their games. Rod was amazed that no one else wanted to help poor Jake who had only just come to live in the neighbourhood.
Slide 7
Rod picked up Jake’s bag and helped him up. He told him that he would call for him the next day and that he would sort out with Karl the return of the stolen DVD. If Karl didn’t give it back, Rod would get their teacher involved.
On their way home Rod kept thinking about the pound coins in his pocket. He’d been saving his pocket money to get some football cards at the weekend. Rod hesitated as they reached the corner shop. Jake wasn’t expecting an ice-lol but would this help cheer him up after the rotten afternoon he’d had? Jake knew that if he bought an ice lol for Rod he’d have to wait another whole week before he could get the football cards he has saved up for. Rod didn’t know what to do, football cards the weekend, or an ice-lol for Jake now.
Rod stopped and took Jake into the shop and bought him the ice-lol. All the way back to Jake’s house Rod reassured him that everything was going to be fine and that the DVD would be recovered.
Slide 8
Rod was late home that night but he was pleased to have been able to help out his new friend. Jake certainly had a friend now and what a great friend Rod was. How kind Rod had been and what a difference he had made to cheer Jake up on this awful afternoon.
Acts of kindness can make all the difference to our everyday lives. Jesus told a story just like this one about a similar act of kindness. Jesus said that if we love him we should show our love for others by acts of kindness. Do you want to be like Jesus and Rod in being kind to others?
