‘God Colours’ - Week 1

Be Yourself

Matthew 5 v 5 [The Message] “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are—no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.

There is a set of PowerPoint slides for week 1 to accompany this session’s intro, lead-in drama and teaching material.
PowerPoint, Leaders’ notes and other items downloadable from the bottom of this webpage.

PowerPoint slide 1 - ‘God Colours’ series rainbow theme slide. Each week we’ll be adding a new theme to one of the colours. On the final week we’ll have filled the rainbow in completely. Use this slide as part of intro.

Series Intro

So, kids we’re in our series ‘God Colours’. God has filled the world with colour, the sky, the land, the plants, people, the rivers and sea. But not just with colours like green, red, yellow, blue but with special colours, colours that make a huge difference in the world, colours of goodness, kindness, love and many other things. God is totally artistic and creative and He wants us to help Him shine out His special colours in the world.

(Have some paints, brushes and a board with a sheet of paper for the children to see).

I have some paint here and I want you to see if you can imagine a colour for things. If you think of love what colour would you give love? (take answers) I would probably give love a red colour because of a red heart. (Paint an arch of red on the piece of paper and write underneath it ‘love’). What about a colour for say laughter? (take answers) I would think of the colour yellow (paint an arch of yellow on the paper and write laughter under it). What colour would you give to peace? I would think of green or maybe blue. (Paint an arch of blue and write peace under it).

So over the next few weeks we are are going to look at how God wants us to live in such a way that we bring to the world around us some of God’s beautiful colours, making His world a better place.

SLIDE 2 - This week in ‘God Colours’ we’re looking at how God wants you to Be Yourself.

PART 1 - LEAD-IN SESSION Drama

Outline for leaders.

This drama is about two friends who agree to meet up and go to the theatre together. Independently they decide that as it’s a posh theatre they’ll dress up. However, they overdo this and end up not recognising each other at the theatre. They meet afterwards questioning why the other didn’t turn up as agreed only to discover they were in fact both there. They agree that it was a bit ridiculous and that they should always be themselves and not try to be someone they are not.

Parts and props

Parts:
* Two friends 1 and 2.
* 3 - 4 other people as theatre goers
Props:
*
Some kind of fancy dress from your resource for the two friends 1 and 2. Whatever you can dig out to dress these two up so that they become somewhat disguised.
* A row of chairs set out at the back of the stage for the theatre audience. .

drama - The Theatre

The drama begins with two friends 1 and 2 bumping into one another on the street. They start chatting together about what they’ve been up to over the last week. At the close of the conversation, one mentions a play they are going to watch at the Royal Gala Theatre London. The other comments, with real expression / emphasis on what a posh place that is and how they too had thought about going there but had, had second thoughts. The friends agree that they should both go and that they would meet outside the theatre before the play starts. The two friends disappear back stage.

The other theatre goers make their way onto the stage and take their seats whilst the two friends quickly dress up back stage.

The first friend emerges in fancy dress and waits outside of the theatre for the other friend. Friend 2 arrives and walks straight past friend 1 who doesn’t recognise them. Friend 1 decides to enter the theatre and takes their seat mumbling to themselves but so that the audience can clearly hear how they can’t understand how their friend hasn’t turned up.

Friends 1 and 2 leave the theatre, the other theatre goers remaining for a few moments to give friends 1 and 2 time to change back and once again bump into one another. The friends ask why the other wasn’t at the theatre only to discover that they both were but didn’t recognise one another.

The friends agree that trying to be someone you aren’t is not a good idea and they promise one another that they’ll try to always be themselves.

PART 2

BIBLE CHAT (LISTEN-UP TIME – SLIDE 3)

Be Yourself

For Leaders:
The first part of the chat this evening comprises another sketch, which depicts someone putting on a voice when speaking on the phone to try and impress the person on the other end.

Kids we’re going to see another little drama to help us with tonight’s theme, See what you make of it.

Sketch 1 - ‘Making the call’

Two people in a room chatting together normally. Suddenly person one has to make a phone call. They dial out waiting for an answer. Person two is absolutely shocked when the phone is answered and person one completely changes the tone of their voice to an extraordinary posh one. When person one comes off the phone, person two immediately asks them what the voice was all about querying why they just couldn’t be themselves. Person one struggles to answer but mumbles something about being taken more seriously when putting a posh voice on. Person two advises that we shouldn’t do this, we should always be our self.

SLIDE 4 All around us there are people who want to be like someone else. They think they must put on an act to impress others. Some people think that they will be happy if they look like a film star, model, pop star or football hero. But trying to copy someone else in how they look or what they do doesn’t bring true happiness. True happiness comes by being content with who you are. We don’t need to impress our friends or God by trying to be someone we’re not. Always be yourself! This is sometimes not easy but God will help you.
Remember, God loves you just the way you are!
Always be yourself! Just be you!

SLIDE 5
Super hero sketch
Characters:
Superhero:
To come onto stage as 3 different superhero characters.
Two people sitting on stage chatting.
(Superhero can use any resources you may have or make to signify who they are. T-shirt, cape, simple cardboard mask or symbol. Any superhero characters that the kids will recognise can be depicted.)

Superhero bursts onto stage as hero one – “Ta-dar, I’m Superman!” They quickly disappear. The people sitting on stage are startled and bemused at the entrance.
Suddenly superhero character emerges for a second time now as hero two – “Tadar, I’m Spiderman!” Again, the hero quickly disappears leaving the onlookers baffled.
To the amazement of the onlookers the superhero appears for a third time. “Ta-dar, I’m Batman!” The people on stage are quite puzzled.
After disappearing, the hero emerges again but without pretending to be a superhero this time. The people on stage look around at the audience, the super hero gestures as if to say – who am I now? One of the people on stage asks “And who are you now?”. The super hero replies “Ta-dar, I’m me!”

SLIDE 6 Some people want to be like a superhero they see on film but real superheroes are people who take what they’ve got and use it to help others. We can all be superheroes by using what you have to help someone else. And God wants to use YOU! Yes YOU!

Sometimes people want to be like someone else because they think they are not good enough. That is never true we are all good enough, just as we are right now! You are so wonderful and valuable in God’s eyes; you are amazingly special to Him. That’s why God’s Son Jesus came, He came for YOU. God treats us all individually the same and this evening, He loves YOU and wants YOU just as you are to follow Him.

SLIDE 7 Sometimes we don’t want to be ourselves because of things that are going on in life that are not nice. We feel we want to somehow hide behind a mask or disguise. We put on a brave face when actually we feel rotten inside. God understands and wants you to tell Him all about it. And if you ever feel like that and want to tell one of the leaders here, they’ll be only too pleased to listen and pray with you about it.

SLIDE 8 So that’s our first ‘God Colour’ of this series ‘Always be yourself’.
We’re going to pray now; we’re going to pray that each one of us will know just how much God loves us. And, we’ll pray that each of us will know how special we are and that He will help us to be ourselves. God has a very special plan for your life and He wants YOU to be happy in just being yourself.

Prayer:

Dear God,
Thank you that we only need to be ourselves with You. Thank you, God, that You love us just the way we are. Help us to always be ourselves and to follow You in using who we are and what we are, to help others.
Amen
